This overview is a quick introduction to the R extension for VS Code. Read the extension README for a detailed list of features. Besides the workspace viewer, there is also a data viewer, a plot viewer, and a widget viewer. Here, the rounded, closing Π shape of the p and the Ρ shape of the r have become difficult to distinguish. The descending stroke of the Latin letter R has fully developed by the 3rd century BC, as seen in the Tomb of the Scipios sarcophagus inscriptions of that era. From around 50 AD, the letter P would be written with its loop fully closed, assuming the shape formerly taken by R. The letter R is believed to derive ultimately from an image of a head, used in Semitic alphabets for the sound /r/ because the word for “head” was rêš (or similar) in most Semitic languages.

The completion shows the available functions and variables in the scope and the current R workspace along with the documentation from packages or provided as comments. Just because R is specifically accounting for research and development used for statistical analysis and data visualization doesn’t mean its use is limited. It’s actually quite popular, ranking 12th in the TIOBE index of the most popular programming languages.

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. Functions are first-class objects and can be manipulated in the same way as data objects, facilitating meta-programming that allows multiple dispatch.

Structure of a function

Along with its utility in data analytics and visualization, R holds several other advantages that can make it a great addition to your tech stack. R is heavily used in genetics, bioinformatics, drug discovery, and epidemiology. For example, in drug discovery, R is used to crunch the data gathered in pre-clinical trials and determine how safe a drug is. In epidemiology, it is used to predict how a disease will spread in a pandemic.
